GUY ELESSA “ BE CAREFUL NOT TO LIMIT THE VIOLENCE IN SCHOOLS AS AN ACADEMIC OR STUDENT MISCONDUCT PROBLEM.”

The author of the book entitled “African Renaissance: South Africa’s Foreign Policy and the Quest for African Development” and President of African Renaissance in the Making (ARITMA) believes the upgrowing violence in Cameroun schools find it’s roots in the societal system. Here is the entire declaration of Guy Elessa, cameroun diplomate recorded by Afrikinfo.net
“What we see in Cameroon schools today stems out from the same kind of frustrations students live in; from their family difficulties, the peer influence and even television phenomena with violence being perpetrated in movies and the news being the norm.
We should however be careful not to limit the violence in schools as an academic or student misconduct problem. Schools are a sub-system of the society, so highly represents what we live in the society. Remember the violence in New-Bell Douala some few months ago; the Sangmelima uprising of the population against different groups; the attacks and breaking into Cameroon Embassies abroad are all signs of frustration manifested by the people that need to be addressed.
Remember that when someone is frustrated, he turns to someone smaller or weaker than him to express his/her frustration. It causes violence in the society. “
